Top 5 things to look for before buying Bedding accessories

Our market and consumer research show that buyers get very confused and many times misled by attractive marketing offers while buying bed sheets, fitted sheets, pillow cases and shams. Our consultant team comprising of agronomists, fabric designers, manufacturing and textile engineers have come up with easy to follow buying guide that will help customers buy reliable, quality and comforting bedding accessories.

Getting a good night sleep and loving your bedsheets and pillow cases / shams is important to continue performing at 100% efficiency at work or leisure. It is easy to pick your sheets only based on color and pattern. But thread count, fabric type and weave are more important qualities that should be evaluated while buying bed sheets. Some of terms that you need to get familiar with while buying your sheets or other bedding accessories are described below:

Thread Count

How many times you have paid a high premium for large thread count sheets? You are not alone! Marketers have used thread counts as an easy way to convince customers to pay a large price for high thread count. However, tests conducted by consumer reports have confirmed that higher thread count does not necessarily mean better sheets. Some of Lussona Collection’s top performing sheets with under 600 thread count have been proven to be strong, very less shrinkage and easy fit even after multiple washes.

What is thread count?

Thread count is the number of threads woven into 1 square inch of the fabric. It is the number of thread used vertically and horizontally to create one square inch of the bed sheets fabric. Single ply sheets used one thread for one vertical and horizontal row, two-ply use thread, three-ply use three threads. More the number of ply, heavier the weave and the sheets. Higher thread count can also be achieved with the combination of higher ply and thinner threads.

To a certain extent, higher thread count would provide softer and smoother sheets. However, don’t get misled by very high thread count. Some sheets claiming 1000 or more thread count and claiming to be ultra-luxury are actually just gimmick! The high thread count sheets may “multiple ply” sheets, meaning multiple thread strands twisted together, increasing the thread count. This does not always translate in better quality, as the manufacturers may use thinner threads, lowering the reliability of the sheets, yet asking for higher price! We at Lussona Collections make sure that our manufacturers use high quality thread with optimum thickness and use state-of-the-art methods for thread count. This ensures that our customers get sheets that are strong, soft with silky touch and can withstand multiple washes even in harshest washing conditions.

Our advice on thread count: We encourage our buyers to buy sheets with thread count between 300 – 600. These sheets will be soft, airy, denser, silkier and heavy. Anything below 200 may not give you the quality and comfort you deserve. Also note that since higher thread count requires more finely spun threads to make them, a higher price is reasonable.

Weaves

Weaving technique is another feature which affects the quality of the fabric. There are different types of weaves such as standard, sateen, pinpoint and twill weave. Standard follow one stitch over, one stich under pattern. Sateen uses a blend of natural fiber and cotton, with four stitches over and one stitch under pattern. Pinpoint weave are with two stitches over and or stitch under. Sateen weave are not as durable as standard but they feel soft. Pinpoint weaves provide more softness than standard. Another weave type is the twill weave, which has a diagonal line patterns. Twill weave sheets are wrinkle resistant.

Fabric – the material

Cotton is natural, breathable, durable and comfortable. 100% cotton is the leader when you are looking for luxurious high quality sheets or other bedding accessories. We at Lussona Collections offer our products made from organically grown, natural, undyed cotton fibers which minimizes any risks due to allergies from chemicals and dyes. Look for a Green Leaf logo on our products!

Blended cotton which may comprise of certain percentage of cotton mixed with polyester may be preferred if you like wrinkle resistant sheets.

Other commonly available material are flannel, muslin, oxford, percale and sateen. These materials are also used in weaves with cotton to give different characteristic to the product. For example, a combed cotton percale will provide affordable durability. Silk satin sheets are soft, smooth and luxurious, but will be expensive to buy and maintain.

Combed cotton offer smooth and soft fabric due to shorter fibers. However, Egyptian cotton is by far the most luxurious fabric. Egyptian cotton only grows along the Nile river and is used for the world’s highest quality bedding fabric. The Egyptian cotton has extra-long fibers which are strong and super absorbent. Lussona Collections offers sheets made using Egyptian cotton that offers you a guaranteed luxury, comfort and durability.

Our advice on material: Not sure which material you would like? Buy our pillow shams or pillow cases and feel for yourself which ones you like the most and then buy the matching sheet sets.
